Indian Spices Set to Dominate Global Market with New International Quality Certification
Key Highlights of the Certification:
Global Recognition: The Codex Alimentarius Commission, established by the FAO and WHO, sets science-based standards for food safety and quality. By achieving these standards, Indian spices now meet globally recognized benchmarks, which simplifies international trade and builds consumer trust.
Standardization Process: These standards were drafted during the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) meeting held in Guwahati in October 2025. Following rigorous checks by international committees regarding food safety, additives, and labeling, they have now been officially approved for international implementation.
Economic Impact for Farmers and Exporters:
India is already a leading global producer and exporter of Black Cardamom and Coriander. With established international benchmarks, exporters will face fewer technical hurdles in foreign markets.
For farmers, particularly in the North-Eastern Himalayan regions where Black Cardamom is a primary crop, these standards are expected to open new market opportunities and ensure better price realization.
While India currently imports a portion of its Vanilla needs, the standardization of Vanilla quality will encourage better domestic production and foster more robust trade practices in the long run.
Experts believe that this milestone will act as a catalyst for growth, helping India consolidate its position as a reliable supplier of high-quality spices in the competitive global arena.
