Is the Universe Really Resting on Sheshnag’s Hood?

In Sanatan Dharma, the structure of the universe is not merely physical but deeply spiritual and symbolic. According to the Vishnu Purana and Shrimad Bhagavatam, the entire cosmos rests on the divine hoods of Sheshnag (also known as Anant Shesha), the eternal serpent.

Sheshnag himself is supported on the back of Kurma (the giant tortoise avatar of Lord Vishnu), and this entire cosmic setup floats in the vast Ksheer Sagar (Ocean of Milk). Lord Vishnu rests in Yog Nidra (divine sleep) on Sheshnag, with a lotus emerging from his navel, on which Lord Brahma sits and creates the universe.

The 14 Lokas (Worlds)

Hindu scriptures describe the universe as divided into 14 Lokas (realms or planes of existence), which are said to be located on the divine lotus stalk of Lord Brahma.

Upper Seven Lokas (Urdhva Lokas)

These represent higher levels of consciousness and spiritual evolution:

• Brahmaloka — The highest realm, abode of Lord Brahma, where creation is governed.


• Tapaloka — Realm of intense penance, home to great sages and deities.


• Janaloka — Abode of the Sanakadi Rishis (eternally wise sages).


• Maharloka — Realm of great sages engaged in yajnas and knowledge.


• Swargaloka — Heaven, ruled by Indra, filled with divine pleasures and celestial beings.


• Bhuvarloka — The space between Earth and Heaven, realm of planets, stars, and semi-divine beings.


• Bhuloka (Prithviloka) — The Earth, where humans live and perform karma.

Lower Seven Lokas (Patal Lokas)

These are the subterranean realms associated with material and mystical powers:

• Atal Loka — Realm of demons (danavas).


• Vital Loka — Abode of Shiva’s ganas.


• Sutal Loka — Kingdom of King Bali, blessed by Vamana Avatar.


• Talatal Loka — Realm of the demon architect Maya.


• Mahatal Loka — Home to numerous serpent (Naga) races.


• Rasatal Loka — Dark realm of asuras.


• Patal Loka — The lowest realm, filled with mysterious caves of Nagas and daityas.

Spiritual Significance

Below these lokas are also described various Naraka Lokas (hells), where souls face the consequences of their karma.

This entire cosmic structure is not to be understood only literally, but as a profound spiritual framework. Each loka represents different dimensions of life, consciousness, and karma. The whole system is sustained by Lord Vishnu, while Sheshnag provides eternal stability and protection.

It is believed that as long as Sheshnag exists, the creation will continue to exist. This beautiful mythological description symbolizes the eternal balance, divine order, and interconnectedness of the universe in Sanatan Dharma — reminding us that everything ultimately rests on the divine will and the cosmic serpent’s hood.
