Shubman Gill Prioritised for 2027 ODI World Cup & WTC Final – T20 Put on Hold
Despite a stellar IPL 2026 season where he scored 732 runs for Gujarat Titans, Shubman Gill has not been included in the Indian T20 squad for the upcoming series against Ireland and England.
According to a PTI report, the BCCI and the selection committee have chalked out a clear long-term plan for the current Test and ODI captain. The focus is to keep him fresh for the two biggest upcoming challenges — the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Reasons Behind the Decision
India has nine crucial Test matches left in the current WTC cycle. To stay in contention for the final, the team needs to win at least seven of them. Additionally, India is expected to play around 35 ODIs before the 2027 World Cup.
“The selectors do not want to overburden Shubman Gill with excessive cricket. He has the responsibility of captaining both the Test and ODI teams. In the next two years, India has two major targets — the WTC Final and the 2027 ODI World Cup. His fitness and form are being given top priority.”
The BCCI believes that managing Gill’s workload is essential so he can deliver his best performance in the longer formats, where he is seen as the face of India’s future.
Gill’s T20 Credentials
Gill has an impressive T20 record overall. He scored 650 runs in IPL 2025 and followed it up with 732 runs in IPL 2026. However, his form in international T20s in 2025 was below expectations.
Future Outlook
The report clarifies that the doors for T20 cricket are not permanently closed for Gill. With the 2028 T20 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics still some time away, the current priority remains Test and ODI cricket, especially the 2027 World Cup.
This strategic move highlights the BCCI’s emphasis on careful workload management and long-term planning to ensure India’s key players peak at the right time for the biggest ICC trophies.
